The responsibilities of Pet Ownership

If you are thinking of acquiring a puppy or kitten, you first need to consider whether you are fully prepared to take on the extra responsibilities, that owning an animal will involve, such as:

  • House training and extra cleaning
  • Rearranging your daily routine around the animal's needs and ensuring you still have time to be its companion
  • Ensuring your dog or cat is not a nuisance to other people and their pets
  • Preventing unwanted pregnancies
  • Obtaining veterinary treatment for your pet when it becomes sick or injured
  • Arranging for it to be properly cared for while you are away from home

The PDSA has an ongoing programme of education where we schedule regular presentations to schools and various gatherings to show pet owners how to care for their animals both in sickness and in health. At school level, we involve the children through the medium of puppets and interactive quizzing. The programme has great success and we are often called upon by other Animal Welfare organizations to present our programme to their venues, which we willingly undertake in the name of animal well being.
